LIPISCAN AND LIPIFLOW
Lipiscan is a screening service offered in our office during every full exam. Lipiscan is an instrument used to capture high definition images of a patient's meibomian glands, which would otherwise be impossible to assess with just the naked eye! With these sophisticated images, we can identify if there are any structural changes occurring within the glands and can develop a proactive approach to prevent further gland loss. Ultimately, if there is a functional or structural deficit in a patient's meibomian glands, the patient is more likely to suffer from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and dry eye.
What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?
This is a disease characterized by obstruction of the meibomian glands lining the eyelids. This blockage prevents proper oil secretion onto the surface of the eye. When the oil layer of the tear film is thin, tears evaporate too quickly, and a patient is likely to suffer from dry eye. So, what can be done to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunctio? The Answer: LIPIFLOW!
What is Lipiflow?
Lipiflow is available as the only FDA approved treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Lipiflow is a device that applies heat and pressure to the eyelids to liquefy hardened oils within the meibomian glands. As a result, the glands become unblocked, and oil flows freely into the tear film to eliminate dry eye symptoms.
